Place Management: Concept to Implementation

Program Description: Walkable urbanism is the historic way of developing the built envi-ronment that has substantial future pent up demand in the early 21st century; it is “Back to the Future”. It is defined as complex mix of uses in a pedestrian-oriented design with most daily needs met within walking distance, walkable urban place. This requires a complete redesign of skillsets from site acquisition to construction, finance to marketing. However, it also requires “place management”, a relatively new field of 24/7 management of a walk-able urban place, also referred to as place making.

This Program will offer an introduction to the walkable urban development and place making, strategy and place management…where much if not the majority of real estate development will occur over the next generation. This Program is offered in metropolitan Washington, DC since this region is the national model of walkable urban place making and management and the world model for the urbanization of the suburbs. The future of development and place making is a Metrorail ride away from the George Washington University campus.

The program is delivered in THREE parts, 2 days each, which can be taken alone or se-quentially:

I: Place Management Basics
II: Strategic Planning & Place Making Principles
III: Place Management Organization & Implementation

Day 1: classroom, site visit with tour and interview with place manager, walkable urban developer & public planning official followed by a reception with individuals from the place management field

Day 2: classroom and site visit with tour and interview with place manager, walk-able urban developer and public planning official

Christopher B. Leinberger the Charles Bendit Distinguished Scholar and Research Professor at the Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis is a land use strategist, teacher, developer, researcher and au-thor, balancing business realities with social and environmental concerns.

Richard Bradley is a principal in the Urban Partnership and he has recently been helping to establish or expand Business Improvement Districts in the Washington region. He was formerly the Executive Director of the Downtown DC BID for 17 years and previously served as the CEO of the International Downtown Association for 13 years.

John I. Carruthers the Director of the Sustainable Urban Plan-ning Program at GWU. He was formerly an Economist in the DHUD. His research focuses on urban & regional policy, household demand for en-vironmental quality, & economic geography. He received in 2016 the Dis-tinguished Leadership Award for a Planning Educator from the National Capital Area Chapter of the American Planning Association.
